Samarco is allocating approximately BRL 5 million to support municipalities affected by heavy rains. The funds will be directed to interventions and works to improve road infrastructure. The company had a conversation with the municipalities in its area of operation to check the best way to apply the funds. The provision of hours of equipment, donations of material applicable to problem-solving arising from the rains and advice for a better definition of these solutions are anticipated.
To help homeless people in Ouro Preto and Mariana, due to the heavy rains, Samarco also provided a campaign to collect donations among its employees, at the Germano unit, in Minas Gerais, Ubu, in Espírito Santo and at the headquarters in Belo Horizonte. The company's mobilization resulted in the collection of about a ton of clothes, blankets, non-perishable food and cleaning products. Moreover, Samarco has increased the volume of donations, freely given by its employees, deciding to donate 1,000 staple food baskets. In total, approximately 14 tons of food and essential needs will be donated to homeless people.
“We plan the campaign as a humanitarian action intended for the most affected population and investments to support the municipalities where we operate. This initiative, which involved the entire Samarco team, meets our purpose of doing mining differently by respecting and valuing the people and territories where we operate”, highlighted Samarco's Institutional Relations coordinator , Rodolpho Samorini.
In response to the demands of the municipalities, Samarco has already provided vehicles, backhoe loaders, dump trucks, water trucks, among other equipment, in addition to pipes.
