Samarco will produce more than 60,000 seedlings in a nursery

Cedasf was expanded and should receive 200 thousand plants during the year 2023

Samarco concluded the interventions to expand the Environmental, Social and Forestry Development Center (Cedasf). The site's capacity has been expanded and more than 60,000 seedlings will be planted in the nursery. The expectation is that approximate 200,000 plants will be cultivated in the year 2023. Implemented in 2019, the Center is located in Vila Samarco, near the Antônio Pereira district, in Ouro Preto.

“In addition to the production of forest seedlings, Cedasf involves a series of social activities, in the themes of flora and fauna, research actions and socio-environmental projects. The Center is a practical tool for innovation, partnership, trust and new knowledge in favor of sustainability”, highlighted Environment analyst Diogo César Vilela.

Production is diverse and includes approximately 82 species native to the Atlantic Forest biome to support the region's environmental demand. Among the types of plants are ipê (Tabebuia), cedar, candeias, quaresmeira (Tibouchina granulosa), jacaranda da Bahia (Dalbergia nigra), jussara palm heart, braúna (Schinopsis brasiliensis), among others.

The works were carried out according to innovation and sustainability criteria. Twenty-two tons of material that would be discarded to create a new environment were reused, such as the use of metallic waste in the support pillars of the Germination House, Shaded House, Input Shed and, in particular, on the benches for the production of seedlings.

The project is one of the requirements of the Corrective Operation License (LOC) obtained by Samarco to resume operations. The action is linked to the production of forest seedlings for compensatory plantations.
