The simplified compensation of R$ 35,000 under the PID has already registered more than 314,000 claims on the platform.
There are only 10 days left until the closing of the Definitive Compensation Program (PID), which will take place on September 14, and the program has already received more than 314,000 claims. The eligibility criteria were established in the New Doce River Agreement, and both individuals and legal entities who had not previously applied on the platform are eligible to participate.
At the request of the Federal Prosecution Service, the Public Prosecutors’ Offices of Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, and the Federal and State Public Defender’s Offices, the program was reopened for new applications on August 1.
“The PID has played an important role in advancing reparations, enabling thousands of people to receive their compensation. We are now in the countdown to the end of the PID, and those who meet the eligibility criteria can still apply,” highlighted Laura Sarti Mozelli, Legal Specialist at Samarco.
PID in numbers
The PID has recorded more than 314,000 claims, consolidating itself as an important instrument of individual reparation under the New Doce River Agreement. To date, more than 274,000 agreements have been signed, and around 192,000 payments have been processed, totaling approximately R$ 7 billion already paid in individual compensations under this initiative alone.
These results demonstrate the reach and effectiveness of the program, which ensures fixed compensation of R$ 35,000 for each eligible individual or legal entity, paid in a single installment and released within up to ten days after judicial approval of the individual agreement.
Eligibility criteria
The PID is intended for individuals and legal entities that meet the criteria established in the New Doce River Agreement. The main requirements include:
- Being over 16 years old on the date of the disaster (11/05/2015);
- Having requested registration with the Renova Foundation (in liquidation) by 12/31/2021, or having filed a lawsuit in Brazil or abroad by 10/26/2021, or having applied through the Novel system by 09/29/2023 (respecting the cases that considered 04/30/2020 as the reference date), and not having signed an agreement;
- Providing proof of residence (issued at any date, in the locations listed in the Agreement), an identification document with CPF (for applications submitted by individuals), and a power of attorney granted to a private attorney or a declaration granting powers to the Public Defender’s Office.
Applications must be submitted either through the Public Defender’s Office, whose services are completely free of charge, or through a private attorney. Attorney’s fees amount to 5% of the compensation and are covered by Samarco, with no deduction from the compensation value. Any additional attorney fees negotiated directly between the attorney and the applicant will not be covered by Samarco.
