This action is part of the initiatives under the company's responsibility within the scope of the New Rio Doce Agreement
Samarco has just made an important contribution which is its responsibility under the New Rio Doce Agreement. This involves the transfer of BRL3.5 million for the refurbishment of structures at the Comboios Biological Reserve (REBIO Comboios), located on the border of the municipalities of Linhares and Aracruz, in Espírito Santo.
The financial transfer to REBIO Comboios is intended for actions necessary for the Revitalization of the Visitation Area of REBIO Comboios, including adjustments to the water intake system for the sea turtle tanks, deck restoration, refurbishment and installations of administrative structures, such as a laboratory and Firefighting System, as well as improvements necessary for the accessibility of visitors with mobility difficulties. The funds will also be used to replace the hydraulic infrastructure used to fill and empty the tanks, and to replace the electrical panels and cables in the Tank Control Room.
The transfer will be made through FUNBIO (Brazilian Biodiversity Fund), a private non-profit association. FUNBIO was selected to be the executing institution for these actions due to its historical role as a manager of projects funded by national resources, coming from legal obligations for biodiversity conservation, its national and international recognition, and its cooperation with ICMBio and the Ministry of the Environment.
All this work to revitalize the visitation area brings important improvements to the Comboios Biological Reserve and will enable intensification of an important part of its work, which is the protection of the nesting of several species of sea turtles. The beach area of the Comboios Biological Reserve, between Linhares and Aracruz, is considered one of the largest nesting sites for leatherback turtles in Brazil.
"This transfer to entities that carry out serious and consolidated work like the Comboios Biological Reserve enables effective contribution to improving the infrastructure conditions of this conservation unit, attracting more visitors, promoting environmental education, and assuring the preservation of the sea turtles," the Environmental Reparation Technical Manager, Brígida Maioli, explains.
