Since 2015, BRL 68.4 billion has been invested in reparation and compensation, BRL 30.4 billion of which in the last year, allocated to public policies, indemnities, new districts, and environmental actions in the Rio Doce Basin.
Belo Horizonte, October 29, 2025 - One year after the approval of the New Rio Doce Agreement by the Federal Supreme Court (STF), Samarco has made progress in the reparation with concrete actions, allocating BRL 30.4 billion. The payment of individual indemnities has boosted the economy of the municipalities, the new districts are completed, and environmental actions are being carried out throughout the basin.
The actions described above total BRL 19.5 billion and correspond to Samarco's direct obligations. Another BRL 10.9 billion was transferred to federal, state, and municipal governments, as well as justice institutions, enabling public policies in health, infrastructure, sanitation, and social programs to move forward.
The amounts allocated for reparation and compensation accrued since 2015 reach BRL 68.4 billion, also considering the BRL 38 billion executed by Fundação Renova until September 2024. The New Rio Doce Agreement foresees a total value of BRL 170 billion over 20 years.
“We regret the Fundão dam break and reaffirm our commitment to assuring definitive reparation. The New Rio Doce Agreement represents a significant progress by providing more clarity, legal certainty, effectiveness and definiteness to the reparation,” the president of Samarco, Rodrigo Vilela, highlighted.
As provided about in the Agreement, the company completed the liquidation of Fundação Renova, with authorization from the Public Prosecutor's Office of Minas Gerais (MPMG), pending registration with the competent bodies.
Compensation and Indemnities in Progress
Individual compensations and financial aid paid under the New Agreement already total BRL 14 billion, benefiting more than 288 thousand people, until September 2025. These funds have transformed the economic reality of the basin, stimulating trade, strengthening production chains and creating jobs.
The Definitive Compensation Program (PID) concentrated the majority of the payments: 328 thousand requests, with more than 242,000 individuals and legal entities paid, totaling BRL 8.9 billion. Indigenous peoples, quilombola communities and traditional communities received BRL 943 million in specific aid.
These amounts paid by Samarco under the New Agreement are in addition to the approximately BRL 18.1 billion in 447.3 thousand deals allocated by Fundação Renova until September 2024.
New districts completed
Samarco has completed 100% of the works, started before the signing of the New Agreement, in the districts of Novo Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu, finalizing 389 works, including 22 public assets, such as schools, health centers, cemeteries, squares and water and sewage treatment systems, in addition to housing, businesses, farms, lots, private assets (associations, churches, etc.).
The public assets were transferred to the Municipality of Mariana, with a guarantee of operation for the next three years. For this purpose, a total transfer of BRL 108.9 million is planned, BRL 44.6 million of which has been paid to date.
Currently, six additional properties remain under construction, defined by the residents of Novo Bento Rodrigues after the approval of the agreement by the Federal Supreme Court in November 2024. The forecast is that these constructions will be completed by the end of 2026.
In the two new districts, community life has been consistently strengthened, with a regular calendar of festivities, religious celebrations, and cultural traditions. Daily life is moved by functioning public facilities, such as public schools, and the businesses of the residents themselves. There is a supply of services, with 57 commercial establishments in segments, such as food, clothing, agriculture, general commerce, health and beauty, and pet services, among others.
Ongoing Environmental Actions
On the environmental front, Samarco continued the fencing and protection work which currently covers 42.7 thousand hectares out of a total of 50 thousand hectares planned for compensatory reforestation, in addition to 3.9 thousand protected springs throughout the basin. Feasibility studies will be submitted to Ibama for licensing to assess the removal of additional sediments at the Risoleta Neves Hydro Power Plant (Candonga).
Nine partner nurseries in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo are producing native seedlings. Nearly 11 million seedlings have already been shipped to preservation and water recharge areas. The Rio Doce Seed and Seedling Network, which involves local communities in collecting native seeds, supplies nurseries and direct planting, collected 160 tons of more than 200 native species, until September 2025.
In May 2025, the company delivered the Environmental Recovery Plan (PRA) to the environmental authorities, which will guide the environmental actions of reparation and compensation.
