The main compensation channel of the New Rio Doce Agreement recorded more than 5,500 claims by this Friday (05/29)
The Definitive Compensation Program (PID), the main compensation program established in the New Rio Doce Agreement, recorded more than 5,500 claims after two weeks of the platform's reopening, which began on May 18 at the request of the Brazilian Justice Institutions. The model stands out for its expedited document review and proposal submission processes, and will remain available until July 1, 2026.
Out of this total, 1,481 agreements were signed and referred for court approval, and payments will begin as early as next week. The remaining requests are undergoing document review, a stage that includes checking the claimants' documents, as well as the powers of attorney submitted by public defenders or lawyers.
Why was the PID reopened?
The purpose of reopening the program was to provide access to compensation for eligible individuals and companies that had not applied before, whose power of attorney was invalidated, or who were unable to reach an agreement previously due to missing the deadline to accept the proposal or to correct documents, as well as those who previously refused the proposal offered on the platform.
“The volume of applications and proposals already submitted demonstrates the program’s operational capacity and its commitment to accessible, simplified, and swift compensation for eligible claimants,” says Laura Sarti Mozelli, Legal Specialist at Samarco.
Enrollment in the PID can be carried out through representation by the Public Defender’s Office, which provides free assistance, or by a private attorney with a valid power of attorney. The 5% legal fees set out in the Agreement are paid by Samarco, without deduction from the compensation amount due to claimants. Any additional amounts charged as legal fees are not covered by the company.
The eligibility criteria follow the parameters established in the New Rio Doce Agreement. These criteria include: being over 16 years of age on the date of the Fundão Dam breach; having requested registration with the former Renova Foundation by December 31, 2021; having filed a lawsuit by October 26, 2021 (provided the action does not concern exclusively water damage); or having entered the Novel system by September 29, 2023, without a previously signed agreement.
304,000 people compensated under the PID
By April 2026, more than 304,000 compensations had already been paid by the program, surpassing the BRL 11.2 billion mark in disbursements. The program provides individual compensation of BRL 35,000 for eligible individuals and legal entities.
