The initiative will take place at the Mercado Municipal throughout June; payments for claims submitted after the reopening have already begun
Samarco teams will be available this June to answer questions from residents of Governador Valadares about the Definitive Indemnity Program (PID), with in-person and individualized assistance. The program, the main indemnification initiative under the New Rio Doce Agreement, was reopened on May 18 following a request from Brazilian Justice Institutions, and will remain open for applications until July 1, 2026.
The Q&A sessions will be held at the Mercado Municipal, located at Rua Israel Pinheiro, 3384, Centro, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The Q&A sessions will take place on June 17, 18, 29, and 30.
“During these meetings, individuals can have their questions answered regarding eligibility criteria, required documentation, and the steps for entering the program,” highlights Samarco's legal specialist, Laura Mozelli.
Just three weeks after the platform's reopening, the PID has already recorded over 7,000 submissions. Out of this total, 3,000 settlement agreements have already been signed and submitted for court approval, and nearly 1,000 payments have been executed.
The remaining claims are undergoing document review, a phase that includes verifying the documentation submitted by the claimants. The PID stands out for its agility in analyzing claims and presenting indemnification proposals, as well as the straightforward documentation requirements.
Who can apply
The reopening aims to provide access to indemnification for eligible individuals and companies who did not apply previously or whose claims were closed due to invalid power of attorney. The initiative also covers individuals who failed to reach a settlement previously because they missed the deadline to correct identification or proof of address documents, missed the deadline to accept a proposal, or rejected a previously offered proposal on the platform.
