Agreement provides for the mining company's equity stake in the Serra do Tigre Wind Complex and the supply of 45 average MW of renewable energy starting in 2027
Samarco and Casa dos Ventos have formalized a long-term strategic agreement to strengthen the mining company's energy efficiency through renewable sources. The agreement provides for Samarco's equity stake in the Serra do Tigre Wind Complex, located between Rio Grande do Norte and Paraíba, reinforcing the company's strategy as a self-producer of clean, renewable energy and advancing its decarbonization process.
The transaction was approved by the Administrative Council for Economic Defense (CADE) this Monday (June 1), and both parties will proceed with the procedures to implement the agreement. The initiative will enable the delivery of 45 average MW of clean energy starting in 2027.
Samarco currently operates with 100% electricity from renewable sources and has a goal to reduce carbon emissions by 30% by 2032 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2050.
"This self-production model contributes to expanding the predictability of energy costs and reinforces our sustainability strategy and our search for operational and financial efficiency through the use of renewable sources," says Gustavo Selayzim, Chief Financial, Strategy and Procurement Officer at Samarco.
“This agreement contributes to Samarco's decarbonization journey and the trend in Brazilian mining to adopt sustainable energy solutions. By structuring long-term partnerships through self-production, we deliver not only renewable energy, but also security of supply with competitiveness and financial predictability,” says Lucas Araripe, Executive Director at Casa dos Ventos.
