Residents of Galiléia may participate in Water Damage conciliation task force

Agreement signed by Samarco provides for payment of BRL 13,018.00 to eligible plaintiffs who formalize the court settlement

Residents of Galiléia who have lawsuits related to Water Damage may participate in the conciliation hearings held by the Court of Justice of Minas Gerais (TJMG). The assistance sessions began last week and are held at the Judicial Center for Conflict Resolution and Citizenship (CEJUSC), at the headquarters of the Brazilian Bar Association (OAB) in Governador Valadares, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

People who have lawsuits and are summoned must attend the hearings, accompanied by a private attorney or representative of the Public Defender’s Office, which offers free assistance, and present a photo ID. It is also possible to request a virtual hearing through an attorney or the Public Defender’s Office.

Task force in Governador Valadares

The Water Damage conciliation task forces continue to take place in Governador Valadares, in an initiative conducted by the TJMG, through CEJUSC, with support from the local OAB. The initiative seeks to expand the consensual resolution of causes related to the interruption of the water supply after the Fundão dam collapse.

Water Damage

The Water Damage lawsuits are related to the interruption of the water supply caused by the Fundão dam collapse. As of May 2026, a cumulative total of BRL 187 million had been paid out.

The New Rio Doce Agreement provides for payment of BRL 13,018.00 per plaintiff, with no monetary adjustment, with payment made within 30 days after court approval of the individual agreement. Eligibility to receive a settlement offer depends on meeting the criteria set out in the agreement; that is, the offer covers only plaintiffs who filed individual lawsuits by October 26, 2021 and who have proof of address documents issued between October and December 2015, in the municipalities of Aimorés, Alpercata, Belo Oriente, Galiléia, Governador Valadares, Itueta, Naque, Periquito, Resplendor, and Tumiritinga. Anyone who has already received compensation for Water Damage and/or who has a final, unappealable judgment dismissing the claim is not eligible for the offer.

The offer also covers attorneys’ fees, in the amount of BRL 650.90, which are paid by Samarco, with no deduction from the compensation amount. If an additional agreement has been made with the attorney, any contractual attorneys’ fees will be paid by the party, with no liability whatsoever for Samarco.
