AFE and ASE end in March 2026

Emergency Financial Assistance (AFE) payments are ending this month, March 2026, as provided for in the New Rio Doce Agreement.

The end of AFE payments has been public knowledge since the Agreement was ratified by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in November 2024. The New Rio Doce Agreement ensures the implementation of permanent reparation measures, including specific programs carried out by public authorities to support economic recovery and income restoration for people affected by the dam collapse.

Important: Important: Exclusively with respect to the PICTs covered by Annex 3, there will be supplemental payments until the public consultations are held.

Emergency Financial Assistance (AFE) and Emergency Subsistence Assistance (ASE) for Indigenous peoples, quilombola communities, and traditional peoples and communities (PICTs) also end in March 2026, as provided for in Annex 3 of the New Rio Doce Agreement.

After these benefits end, people covered by Annex 3 who did not have active AFE and ASE benefits will receive supplemental payments through May, which is the deadline for the public consultation conducted by the Federal Government. The amount of this supplemental payment is equal to what each family currently receives.
