Commitment to sustainability

*Rodrigo Vilela – Samarco’s CEO

Last year, we publicly made a commitment to sustainability through our Statement of Commitment to Sustainability, and this week we share our learnings and evolution from that period in the 2021 Sustainability Report. More than a document, the Report shows our accountability to society, based on dialogue and transparency. Therefore, we consider it a tool to objectively present our management, our practices and effective actions to achieve our purpose of carrying out mining differently, in a safer and more sustainable manner.

The year 2021 can be summarized, for all of us at Samarco, as the consolidation of the operational restart and the progress made along our new journey. In 2021, we reentered the seaborne iron ore pellet market, maintaining the company's solid position in terms of product quality and reliability. Using new technologies for tailings disposal, we have achieved our goal of operating without tailings dams. With the implementation of a filtration system, about 90% of the water extracted from the tailings is reused, demonstrating the sustainable aspects of this approach. We reinforced the monitoring of all geotechnical structures, using more than 1,500 pieces of equipment, ensuring more safety in operations. Our structures are audited by third parties and have Dam Integrity Assurance Statements (DCE).

Last year, in terms of production, we reached the target for the period, with 7.879 million tons of iron ore pellets and fines by December, operating at 26% of the company's capacity.

We consolidated investments in large-scale projects, such as the de-characterization of the Germano dam and pit. So far, BRL 510 million has been allocated to interventions, which are at an advanced stage. Moreover, we have completed the initial stage of studying new technologies for dewatering and slimes disposal. We also addressed the management of the mitigation of the impacts caused by the collapse of the Fundão dam, reinforcing our responsibility with the remediation and compensation actions. Last year, together with our shareholders, we allocated BRL 8.1 billion to the 42 programs under the responsibility of Fundação Renova. But the collapse will never be forgotten. It brought us the mission and the need to evolve as people and as a company. We will continue to strengthen our good practices for the environment, for the communities and territories that welcome us in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, sharing value with society. In this regard, we strengthened our ties with the communities where we operate, investing BRL 7 million in social and institutional programs. In April last year, we started our Judicial Reorganization process, a fundamental step to preserve the social function of our company.

At the same time, we invest in people. We have earmarked more than BRL 1 million in donations to combat the impacts of the pandemic. We created the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Program to strengthen our actions to promote equality and respect. We generated BRL 1.1 billion in tax revenue for Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo, including that generated by suppliers regarding purchases for services to Samarco. Furthermore, we maintain a base of approximately 9,000 direct employees, 1,500 of which are our own.

In addition to demonstrating our commitment to safe, sustainable mining, with a focus on valuing people, the results were reflected in the Climate Survey, showing favorability on the part of 90.2% of employees. We ranked 1st in the steel and mining industry and 22nd in the general ranking of the Amazing Places to Work 2021, an initiative of UOL and Fundação Instituto de Administração (FIA).

These are some of the results available in our Sustainability Report, which describes a series of projects and actions undertaken and reflects our evolution in relation to our values, culture and principles. Looking back at last year and the lessons learned, we realize that we have made progress, but we want to do even more. This is our commitment.
