New Rio Doce Agreement increases sanitation in Linhares aligned with the Legal Framework on Sanitation

Investments strengthen the supply of water, expand water safety and contribute to national universal sanitation goals

Linhares (ES)

The expansion of the basic sanitation system in Linhares (ES), enabled by funds from the New Rio Doce Agreement, represents a concrete step forward aligned with directives from the Legal Framework on Basic Sanitation, which establishes the national goal of universal access to potable water and sanitary sewage by 2033. As a municipality that is party to the New Agreement, Linhares now has the structural conditions needed to bolster its water supply, expand service efficiency, and promote lasting improvements to the population’s quality of life. The expected interventions reinforce the role of sanitation as a public policy that is essential to urban development, collective health, and water resource protection.

Resource management and the definition of work execution priorities are under the purview of the Linhares city hall, which will be responsible for leading interventions according to municipal plans and the needs of the population.

“Providing resources so the municipal authorities can invest into sanitation projects is extremely important for development, with benefits ranging between environmental, social, and economic aspects. These funds are meant to transform the reality of impacted regions, with water sanitation, abstraction, and sewage treatment infrastructure works, improving the quality of life and health of hundreds of Linhares families”, states the mayor of Linhares, Lucas Scaramussa.

In the context of the New Rio Doce Agreement, these structural interventions contribute not only to local development, but also to the continuity of environmental and social reconstruction of the Rio Doce Basin, reinforcing the understanding that Basic Sanitation is one of the pillars for river recovery, ecosystem preservation and territory sustainability over time.

New Rio Doce Agreement

The new transfer of funds, in the amount of BRL 43.58 million, was carried out this Monday (03/30) by Samarco and is part of the commitments set out in the New Rio Doce Agreement, which establishes mechanisms for definitive remediation of the damages caused by the Fundão dam breach, focusing on strengthening public policies in the affected territories.
