Program has already registered more than 7,500 applications after reopening and remains open until July 1, with BRL 35,000 in compensation for eligible individuals and legal entities
The Definitive Compensation Program (PID), implemented by Samarco, continues to stimulate the economy in the eligible areas, with effects felt mainly in the commerce, services, and construction sectors. In Governador Valadares (MG), business owners report an increase in the circulation of funds and growth in sales driven by payments made to eligible individuals. By May 2026, the program had already allocated more than BRL 11.2 billion in individual compensation.
For Giselly Souza Modesto, administrative manager of a construction materials store in the municipality, the impact was felt directly in sales throughout 2025.
“We noticed a significant improvement in sales once compensation payments began circulating in the market. Many customers saw these funds as an opportunity to invest in their own homes, renovating, expanding, and bringing more comfort and quality of life to their families”, she said.
Giselly also notes that the store created promotional campaigns aimed at program beneficiaries, including cash-payment promotions and social media outreach.
“The result was a significant increase in sales and an important boost to local commerce. Now, with the reopening of the PID, our expectations are very positive for the second half of the year. The trend is toward a new wave of investment in renovations and home improvements, once again strengthening retail and stimulating the regional economy”, she said.
In addition to the positive effects on the local economy, the PID has also contributed to getting their finances in order and the resumption of personal plans for eligible families. A resident of Aracruz (ES), Jociane Demonel Rocha Xavier highlights the importance of the program for her family’s situation.
“The PID brought much-needed relief to my family. I am the mother of four children and have a child who needs ongoing care, medical appointments, and medication. With the compensation, I was able to cover essential expenses, take better care of my children, and have more peace of mind to move forward. This support made a difference in the lives of many families, including mine, helping us resume our plans with more dignity and security”, she says.
While continuing to have a significant positive economic impact in the eligible areas, the PID is also moving quickly in this new reopening phase. Since May 18, 2026, more than 7,500 people have applied through the platform; more than 3,700 agreements have been signed, and more than 1,550 payments have been made. The program was reopened following a request from the Brazilian justice institutions. The program will remain available for new applications until July 1, 2026, and provides for compensation of BRL 35,000 per eligible individual or legal entity.
The program features simplified document review and digital processing, ensuring speed in the eligibility review, offer acceptance, and payment stages. The new PID stage covers people who had not yet applied through the system and people whose application was closed because their power of attorney was deemed invalid. It also covers people whose applications were closed because they missed the deadline to correct issues with an identification document and/or proof of address, missed the deadline to accept the compensation offer or rejected the offer. Applications may be submitted through the Public Defender’s Office, which offers free assistance, or through a private attorney with a valid power of attorney.
Created as part of the measures provided for in the New Rio Doce Agreement, ratified by the Federal Supreme Court (STF) in November 2024, the PID had already compensated more than 305,000 people by May 2026.
