Samarco concludes environmental campaign with 58 initiatives in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo

Biodiversity-focused campaign mobilized over 11,300 people across 26 communities in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo

Throughout June, in celebration of World Environment Day, observed on June 5, Samarco carried out a broad environmental education program in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Throughout the month, the company promoted 58 environmental education initiatives that mobilized over 11,300 people across 26 communities in both states. The theme of the 2026 campaign was biodiversity, and the activities addressed fauna and flora conservation, solid waste management, and the strengthening of sustainable practices.

The initiatives involved employees, contractors, students, educators, and residents from the communities surrounding the company's operations, at the Germano (MG) and Ubu (ES) units.

“More than transmitting information, we sought to provide experiences that connected people to biodiversity, awakening an understanding of each individual's role in environmental conservation”, states Ana Paula Correa, Environmental analyst at Samarco.

In Minas Gerais communities, the program brought together educational talks, educational games, mural painting, theatrical performances, exchange fairs, and educational competitions in schools, addressing the importance of recycling and the entire waste management process, from generation to environmentally proper final disposal. In Santa Rita Durão, the Environmental Competition promoted the engagement of the school community and resulted in the collection and transport of three truckloads of recyclable materials that were sent to CAMAR.

In Espírito Santo, students, educators, and residents participated in theatrical performances, workshops on terrariums and bird nests made from gourds, waste reuse actions, and lectures on biodiversity and solid waste.

At the Germano and Ubu units, employees and contractors participated in exhibitions and practical workshops on biodiversity, recycling, and environmental conservation, including activities for recycled paper production and building bird nests with natural materials.

Evaluations by participants indicated that 90% of the ratings were “excellent”, and 99.25% were “excellent” or “good”.

“The campaign demonstrates that small actions, when adopted collectively, generate significant results for the environment. Our goal is to strengthen socio-environmental responsibility in the territories where we operate”, concludes Environmental analyst Mariana Barcelos.
