Infrastructure strengthens water security in the region and improves the regularity of the water supply

About 35,000 residents from eight neighborhoods in Colatina now enjoy more regular water supply and a reduced risk of shortages after Samarco completed, in partnership with the municipality, the construction of a new reservoir complex in the Morada do Sol neighborhood and the modernization of the local Water Treatment Plants (WTPs). The improvements were officially handed over to SANEAR in April 2026.
Before the final handover, the system underwent a 90-day period of assisted operation, during which Samarco provided technical support and trained SANEAR's operators, ensuring the continuity and quality of services.
The system implemented in Morada do Sol is part of the reparation actions under the New Rio Doce Agreement and comprises six reservoirs, which have been integrated into Colatina's water supply system, increasing storage capacity to more than one million liters of treated water and creating a strategic point to ensure supply stability across different water demand scenarios.
In addition to expanding storage capacity, the modernization of the Marista, Aparecida, and Colúmbia WTPs generated immediate operational gains. The improvements increase treatment efficiency and reduce losses throughout the process, expanding the availability of treated water to the population and reducing the need for maintenance interruptions.
"Our focus was to ensure greater safety and predictability in the water supply for the population. The solution was built together with the municipality to meet local needs in a lasting way," says Thyago Félix, Project Specialist at Samarco.
With the project's completion, Colatina's water supply system now has greater response capacity in critical periods and more operational autonomy. The improvements delivered in Colatina are part of a broader set of initiatives aimed at strengthening the municipality's water supply infrastructure.
