Samarco was audited according to requirements established by the Global Industry Standard for Tailings Management (GISTM). The first global standard of good practices for waste management (GISTM), was created in 2020 based on an initiative of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP), the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM). Samarco obtained a result of 89% observance of the 77 established standards.
The requirements encompass aspects related to tailings disposal management, throughout the structure's life cycle, including design, operation, closure and post-closure. Aspects of community development, human rights, safety, engineering, governance, technical reviews, emergency preparedness and transparency are observed.
The company is committed to implementing the good practices established by the GISTM and, since 2020, it has been working to comply with the requirements by August 2023, in addition to strictly observing the requirements of regulatory agencies.
“The decision to perform an audit of its processes to an international standard comes from the commitment to improve safety procedures and risk management to maintain the stability of our structures, mitigating risks to people and the environment, in addition to providing transparency to our production process and monitoring of our structures”, highlighted the Business Risks manager, Daniella Vieira Rihan.
The audit was developed in two stages, in order to check the evolution of initiatives to adjust to good practices in tailings management and observance achieved from the implementation of action plans.
Transparency
In order to increase transparency, Samarco's website was revamped, in particular, the page "Geotechnical Structures" (https://www.samarco.com/estruturas-disposicao-rejeitos/), gathering information on the management and monitoring of structures, with data on the integrity assurance, audit compliance, status of safety monitoring of structures and information on plans for emergency actions.
