Samarco reaches production of 10 million tons of pellets and ore fines

The company earned BRL 9 billion in 2021 and generated another BRL 1.1 billion in tax in the states where it operates

Samarco reached an accumulated production of 10 million tons of pellets and ore fines this April, completing one year and four months of the gradual resumption of its operations at the Germano complexes, in Minas Gerais, and Ubu, in Espírito Santo. The company, which is at 26% of its total capacity, ended 2021 with BRL 9 billion in revenue and generated another R$1.1 billion in taxes in the states where it operates, including the amount spent by suppliers on purchases for the company. In 2021, Samarco's adjusted managerial Ebitda reached BRL 6.48 billion.

For 2022, Samarco expects investments of approximately BRL 1.2 billion. In addition to sustaining the gradual resumption of operations and geotechnical infrastructure, the amount will be allocated to projects to de-characterize the Germano dam and pit, in progress.

Mining differently

With new technologies and innovation as a cultural trait, the company implemented a filtration system for the dry disposal of tailings, ensuring more safety to the production process, in search for a different and sustainable mining.

The expectation is that approximately 8 million tons of ore pellets and fines will be produced by December 2022, as planned. The company should reach 100% of its production capacity by 2029.

“We are meeting our production expectations and delivering a quality product to our customers. But the most important thing is that, little by little, we are recovering relations with the territories where we operate, showing that it is possible to do a mining that is different, safer and more sustainable. Every day, we reinforce our principles of respect for the environment and people”, emphasized the president, Rodrigo Vilela.

From the operational resumption until now, 100 ships have been loaded, with the main destinations being the markets of the Americas, Europe, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia. Samarco also supplies to the domestic market.

The results of the activities developed by Samarco contribute to the economic development of the municipalities where the company operates in Minas Gerais and Espírito Santo. Currently, the company has 1,500 direct employees, totaling 9,000 direct and indirect jobs.

Samarco also has the Força Local program, developed to train and encourage local suppliers, based on the pillars: policies, training, business, monitoring and development and qualification. The program aims at rethinking territories beyond mining.
