Samarco transfers R$ 91.8 million in structural investments to Mariana

Agreements enable infrastructure, mobility, and water security works, with direct benefits for the population

Samarco transfers R$ 91.8 million to the Mariana City Hall, funds that contribute to the municipality's development and combine socioeconomic compensation measures related to the company's operations with voluntary investments. The amounts correspond to two Financial Cooperation Agreements involving voluntary investments, signed this Tuesday (June 9), and a Socio-Environmental Commitment Agreement currently under execution.

Out of the total, R$ 10.5 million will be allocated to the construction of an access road to the district of Camargos (Access 2) and R$ 1.3 million for the refurbishment of the water supply reservoir in the São Pedro neighborhood. The funds also include R$ 80 million related to the Socio-Environmental Commitment Agreement, signed in 2024 and currently under execution, with approximately 78% of the funds already allocated to the municipality.

“These transfers represent more than financial resources. They are structural investments that contribute directly to improving the population's quality of life and to the development of Mariana. Our commitment is to ensure that Samarco's presence generates opportunities and a positive impact that endures beyond our operations,” states Rodrigo Vilela, CEO of Samarco.

Shared definition

The funds from the Socio-Environmental Commitment Agreement are being applied toward direct improvements for the population. The allocation of funds was determined by a joint committee composed of representatives from the Municipal Government, municipal councils, and Samarco. The projects include improvements in solid waste management, maintenance of rural roads, pothole repair operations, structural works, and support for the Zero Tariff Income Transfer Program, which allows low-income families from distant communities to access the city’s municipal seat via public transportation at no cost.

“The partnership model we adopted ensures that resources are transparently directed toward the municipality's priorities. This reinforces the social impact of the actions, generating immediate and lasting benefits for the territory,” highlights Mariana Lisbôa, Sustainability, Government Relations, and Communication Director at Samarco.

Mobility and water security

The construction of a three-kilometer access road to the Camargos district will connect the community to MG-129 and to the municipal seat of Mariana, while also restoring access to Novo Bento Rodrigues. The work — whose executive project was funded by Samarco in 2025 and which will also count on funds (R$ 3 million) from the Municipality of Mariana for its execution — will improve school transportation and strengthen the local economy.

The intervention to refurbish the reservoir in the São Pedro neighborhood will guarantee the full recovery of the supply system. The project ensures greater safety and reliability in the water supply for the community.

“Mariana has a historical responsibility to transform the funds that reach the municipality into development for our people. When we invest in infrastructure, water supply, mobility, and community integration, we are preparing the city to grow in an organized manner and with more opportunities. Our commitment is to ensure that every investment has a purpose, generates concrete results for the population, and contributes to building a stronger, more connected Mariana prepared for the future,” points out Mayor Juliano Duarte.

Other contributions

In addition to the investments announced this Tuesday (9), Samarco has been contributing through structural actions in Mariana, whether linked to its operations or to the reparation of the Fundão dam collapse.

In total, approximately R$ 441.5 million has been allocated since last year, contributions that include voluntary actions or those tied to legal obligations, transfers for public assets in the new districts of Novo Bento Rodrigues and Paracatu, as well as other works and initiatives executed by Samarco.
