Company showed its facilities in Germano and the actions aligned with the ten principles of the Council
Samarco received visitation from the president of the International Council on Mining and Metals (ICMM), Rohitesh Dhawan, this Tuesday (Jun-28), at the Germano Complex, in Mariana. During the visit to the company's facilities, he was introduced to the safety systems of dams and geotechnical structures, the filtration system and the work to de-characterize the Germano dam and pit, which are at an advanced stage. The president also visited the Monitoring and Inspection Center (CMI) and sustainability projects.
“It is rewarding to have the opportunity to welcome the President of the International Council to our facilities. The role of ICMM, which is of global importance, is essential for aligning the mining industry with fundamental principles for safer and more sustainable mining. The visit was important for us to discuss the cultural aspects of our company, the way we operate, our risk management, monitoring and the pillars of our sustainability strategy, adhering to ESG principles and practices. ),” highlighted the president of Samarco, Rodrigo Vilela.
“I am very happy to be here at Samarco and I really enjoyed seeing the Monitoring and Inspection Center (CMI). I believe it is a world class facility that demonstrates the future of our industry when it comes to managing geotechnical structures and that gives our stakeholders confidence that we manage our structures very well. I was also impressed to see the dry stacking system, which I also believe represents the future. Some of the technological improvements that are happening here are benchmarking milestones for the entire industry,” said ICMM President Rohitesh Dhawan.
Aiming at carrying out mining differently, safer and more sustainable, Samarco is in line with the ten principles proposed by the Council, which were also one of the references in the construction of the company's statement of commitment to sustainability. Namely: Ethical Business, Decision Making, Human Rights, Risk Management, Health and Safety, Environmental Performance, Biodiversity Conservation, Responsible Production, Social Performance and Stakeholder Involvement.
The Council is also responsible for the Global Industry Standard on Tailings Management (GISTM), which is a global standard for companies that own mining dams and which, among other things, establishes global transparency and disclosure requirements. Its purpose is to facilitate stakeholder understanding of tailings disposal structures and management practices. Prepared by ICMM, the project had the participation of the Brazilian Mining Institute (Ibram).
“Since the launch of GISTM, Samarco has spared no effort to comply with this standard. ICMM is the one who endorses these actions, so the visit of the representatives is a huge opportunity to show these efforts of carrying out a different mining", evaluated the director of Projects and Sustainability of Samarco, Reuber Koury, who highlighted that the company recently hired a consulting audit to assess compliance with requirements.
ICMM communication director Kristen Dodd, Samarco officer Sérgio Mileipe (Planning and Operations) joined the visit, in addition to general managers Daniel Medeiros (Sustainability) and João Calmon (Germano's Operations) also participated in the visit.
