Evolving our way of being: cultural traits

diversidade

I plan in advance what I’m going to be doing and monitor the responsibilities in order to guarantee deliveries.

I find ways to benefit and improve with each new experience, always willing to learn, including from mistakes.

I make sure that I am making the best use of resources and that there is no waste.

I work involving different people, from different areas, recognizing the difficulties of each one and promoting sincere and transparent conversations.

I prioritize ideas, contribute and make resources available for innovations that give sustainability to the business and reduce the risk of incidents that affect the environment, communities or human life.

Diversity, Equity
& Inclusion

With more than four decades of history and challenges, after the Fundão dam collapse and during the process of operational resumption, it became necessary to look back and take stock. We evaluated the complex scenario that made up our entire trajectory and realized that our values remained perennial. Faced with several lessons learned and guided by these values, the purpose of doing mining in a different, safer and more sustainable way was born. Along with it, came reflections on the changes needed to achieve this – such as diversity, equity and inclusion, as well as concern for mental health.

Thus, we began to structure our DE&I Program, to help minimize the obstacles that we have historically built throughout society and which is reflected in our reality as a company. Through the full insertion and development of socially disadvantaged people, we will be able to have more inclusive, welcoming and diverse environments, where everyone can have the opportunity, voice, space to build and develop their potential with safety, respect and equity. The DE&I Program contributes to the materialization of our value “respect for people”, as well as our cultural trait “partnership and trust”, collaborating for the collective well-being and a healthy and safe work environment for everyone.

To this end, in 2023 we launched our Human Rights Policy and assumed a public moral and ethical commitment to improve our management practices and promote human rights at Samarco. Human Rights aim to guarantee dignity and equality among all people, without distinction. Thus, reaffirming our commitment to human rights also reinforces our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion.

DIVERSITY

Diversity is everything that presents differences. Each person is unique, that’s why we are all different. The term encompasses the expression of gender, disability, age group, religion, racial/ethnic origin, age group, nationality, socioeconomic status, sexual orientation, etc. We are all diversity because we have our own characteristics.

EQUITY

It is recognizing that not all people have access to equal types of education, health, food and other basic needs. Equity is the need to make adaptations so that all people have the same rights and access. These adaptations vary according to differences and the needs of each person.

INCLUSION

The Universal Declaration of Human Rights states that “everyone is entitled to all the rights and freedoms, without distinction of any kind, such as race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or any other status”. This means that all people are equal and should be fully included in society.

Vera

“Looking to the future, planning and seeking mining done by people and for people must consider that we are different and, at the same time, unique.”

Vera Lucia, general manager of Human and Organizational Development

To be a mining company that ensures and disseminates diversity, equity and inclusion and that, based on the importance of human relationships in the pursuit of sustainable mining, works with respect, empathy and transparency in favor of collective well-being.

We believe that the diverse and inclusive environment, through the multiplicity of voices, knowledge and worldviews, continuously drives innovation, collaboration and organizational learning, generating better results for the business.

We understand that working with DE&I contributes to the materialization of the value “respect for people” and the cultural trait “partnership and trust”, collaborating for the collective well-being and a healthy and safe work environment.

We recognize that actions aimed at DE&I contribute to a fairer and more equitable society, and as participants and multipliers, we strive toward the insertion and development of minority groups in the work environment.

When you can be who you are, you show the best of your abilities.

There are groups that historically are minorities and face barriers and, therefore, have little representation in our company, as well as in the mineral sector and in society. For this reason, we are currently working with four Diversity Groups that address the following topics: Race, Gender Equality, LGBTI+ and People with Disabilities. In this way, the actions of the DE&I Program aim to promote the inclusion and development of people with disabilities, LGBTI+, women and black people, in addition to seeking to provide a welcoming, inclusive and equitable work environment for all people. We believe that a diverse company favors an organizational environment with more opportunity, respect and psychological safety for everyone. In this sense, our motto encourages people to be who they are, because that way they will show the best of what they can be!
